What to Do

After completing the reading and exercises in modules 3E, discuss one or both of the following topics. Be sure to clearly identify which topic you are discussing at the start of your post.

Topic 1

What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of judicial activism? Why might a judge favor this approach? What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of judicial restraint? Why might a judge favor this approach? What approach is correct and why?

Topic 2

How important is it that Justice Sotomayor became the first Latina on the Supreme Court? How important should it be? Does diversity on the Court help it better deliver justice for a diverse America? Why or why not?

Topic 3

Why are modern Supreme Court nominations so contentious? What is at stake? Does the nomination process make Supreme Court justices more independent or less independent? Should the nomination process and appointment for life be changed?

  • Describe the concepts associated with political organization in general and the United States in particular.
  • Explain the structure and function of the three branches of government and the system of checks and balances.
  • Investigate the powers of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government.
  • Using data, graphs, charts, and other types of evidence, examine the effectiveness of public policies adopted by the United States and California.
