Geographical location can play a really big role in choosing of distribution channels. Depending on the area of your business different resources come with different availability, different prices, and different demands. Coastal areas utilize shipping from boat through their waterways. Items from different countries may come by boat or by air in order to get to us. Newer forms of distribution involve internet transactions, but are still distributed to consumers in the same fashion.
Formally we use direct and indirect distribution. I think we see indirect distribution more since indirect distribution involves producers to use wholesale and retail companies to distribute their products to consumers. Direct distribution is when a product goes straight from producers to consumers. Other than distributing products, manufacturers will advertise and package differently in different locations to appeal to the nature of that Geographical location. For example, if you are in a large city, the demographics will be much different than that of a small town rural area. Due to that nature, product will advertise and sell differently. So based on Geographical location distribution will take on many different faces. There are different types of distribution channels, the direct, indirect, dual distribution, and reverse. Direct distribution is companies selling products straight to customers. Indirect distribution is when manufacturer uses wholesalers and retailers to sale the products to consumers. Dual distributions is when the manufacturer would sell straight to consumers and to wholesalers ad retailers. Reverse distribution is when it comes from the consumer then to the company, like reused products, refurbished, or recycled products. Geographical location has a large part in the selection of distribution channel. If the market is small then you want to go with a more direct distribution. When the market is large you can use a more indirect distribution which would grow the geographical area.
An example of how geographical location can affect the distribution channels would be if the terrain was mountains or rough terrain you would need trucks for this area that can handle it or planes. Trains may not be in the area to use.
