Now that you can identify and analyze ethos, logos, and pathos, it is your turn to apply what you have learned to your own writing. It is your turn to appeal to ethos, logos, and pathos to convince your target audience (MDC Students) to be activists for a cause.

Your genre is an academic, mostly third person, argumentative essay written in MLA style Your audience are students

Your purpose is to persuade students to take action on a significant issue that you care deeply about and to incorporate two scholarly articles.

Grading Rubric

Meeting word count (10pts): students at or above 800 will earn 10 points. Students slightly below will lose 10 points. Students who submit an incomplete essay will not pass the class (600 words or less is incomplete).

Appealing to logos (25pts): students will appeal to logos by including quotes from two scholarly sources to support their argument. Both articles must come from the MDC Database. Both sources must be about the same issue. Additionally, students must give thoughtful and well explained arguments that attempt to persuade their target audience. Students must also write a focused, well organized, and logical structure with appropriate paragraph breaks and transitions.

Appealing to Ethos (20pts): students will follow MLA, uses a professional tone, cite sources appropriately, and uses their own personal experience to convince students to act.

Appealing to pathos (25pts): students will use good word choice, tone, description and/or stories that connect to the reader. Students will make the audience care and see the importance of the issue. Students will appeal to emotions to motivate the audience to act.
