Transform a graph into an accessible using Matplotlib

In this assignment, you will transform a graph into an accessible one. For a taste of what to expect, check out this accessible makeoverLinks to an external site.Based on your answers to discussion 3, complete the following.

STEP 1: CHOOSE A PLOT TO INCREASE ACCESSIBILITY

First, you will pick a plot of interest to you. After selecting a plot to increase accessibility, you should write the type of visualization you choose using markdown. Next, you will provide the code that generates the initial graph.

Then show the graph that produces the code.

STEP 2: ADD ALTERNATIVE TEXT

Alt text for data visualizations should be concise and include the chart type, the type of data, and the takeaway. Also, a link to the underlying data should be available in the surrounding descriptive text. Next, you should add alternative text by using a markdown cell.

STEP 3: EMPLOY A TAKEAWAY TITLE

Since you have identified the main takeaway in the previous step, turn that into a phrase to add to the graph or slide title. Check out this guideLinks to an external site..

STEP 4: LABEL DATA DIRECTLY

Is there a legend on the chart? If so, can you opt for labelling the data directly or making the legend more accessible by ensuring the order of categories matches the information?

STEP 5: USE SUFFICIENT CONTRAST

Use a colorblind simulator and a contrast checker to determine if you need to adjust the colors, font size or style within the graph. Feel free to use your tool of choice; I’ve listed two free online options below.

  • CoblisLinks to an external site.. Upload an image of your graph and click through the filters to simulate different colorblind combinations. The most common form of color vision deficiency is Deuteranopia (green-blind).
  • Color Contrast Analyzer.Links to an external site. This Chrome extension allows you to check the contrast of a web page by highlighting what text is easily visible. If you find that areas of text aren’t emphasized, that’s an indication that you need to increase the font size, use a simpler font altogether or increase the contrast between the text and background color. You’ll need to open an image of your graph in the web browser.

STEP 6: USE WHITE SPACE

Can we use white space better? Is there enough separation between any graph titles and the nearby elements? Are labels overprinting? If you have sections in your graph (slices in a pie chart, stacks in a stacked bar chart, etc.), can you outline each section in a border to match the background color?

STEP 7: SHOW YOUR IMPROVED PLOT FOR ACCESSIBILITY

FINAL DELIVERABLE

Your final submission should include a PDF report and the Jupyter notebook. To submit, you should zip the two files together. Your “insights” can consist of significant surprises or issues in some of the steps described above. To help you gauge the scope of this assignment, see this exampleLinks to an external site..

In each step, you should present the new improvement in the graph and the improvement of the previous step. For example, in step 4, you should show the code that generates steps three and step 4, i.e., plot with the title plus the label data directly. You are free, but not required, to add comments in each step about your thoughts on the options you selected. To easily export your jupyter notebook into a pdf report, use FILE -> Print Preview -> print as pdf.
