Introduction to Information Systems

Information Systems (IS) play a critical role in supporting, supplementing and automating many of our professional and personal lives, including business decision-making, shaping and transforming industries, and contributing to deep societal and economic change. The impact of technology on economic growth and development, electronic globalization, and the vast opportunities and challenges of a hi-tech world have both short-term and long-term effects on our world. Use this forum to reflect on the following:

  • What is an example of a technology that has global implications?
  • What are some of the short-term issues and challenges with this technology?
  • What are some of the long-term issues and challenges with this technology?

Provided feedback to the following discussions based on this week’s reading and additional research:

1. Technology and Its Global Implications

Networking communication has influenced how people communicate globally. People can exchange information through a wireless network within seconds. Technological advance has replaced the non-digitalized means of communication which was time-consuming (Lecture notes, n.d). Some systems that help in establishing communication include hardware, data resources, and software. In addition, network resources such as fiber-optic and coaxial cables are useful in facilitating technological processes.

Short-Term Challenges

Security, safety, and privacy are some of the short-term challenges that information technology poses. For instance, a lot of peoples’ online accounts can be hacked and personal information to leak to strangers. In addition, people with deviant behaviors bully people online, thus affecting them emotionally (Henry-Nickie, Frimpong, & Sun, 2022). These challenges can only be overcome when one secures their accounts with secret passwords.

Long-Term Challenges

Information technology allows people to upload a wide variety of information contributing to big data (Lecture notes, n.d). The situation leads to an increased volume of online content. The velocity of increases the speed at which data streams online and makes it hard to categorize it as it streams. Notably, the complexity of information streaming online is a great challenge. A lot of people post preferred information because there is no regulation and policies about the quality of data posted online (Barley, 2020). Notably, the lack of government regulation in the use of technology creates loopholes for people to misuse IT.

2. A widely used technology known as a Transaction Processing System (TPS) have grown to be an essential tool in the business world. TPS or transaction processing system is an information system that processes incoming data from internal or external sources and sends it to a database that a firm or business can use. Incoming data or inputs into the TPS are known as transactions that can be separated into two categories known as financial transactions or non-financial transactions. In a global aspect, transaction processing systems are “one of the most used technologies in all online transactions” and are an effective tool in the ecommerce economy. Although it’s nice to have in the toolbelt, all technology has it’s shortcomings and short term challenges that follow the TPS is that they are “expensive to setup” and may need to be approached carefully by new or small businesses/firms. Long term issues with this information system would be the overload problem that could “slow or crash the system with too many transactions on the TPS” that growing businesses/firms should not overlook as a possibility.
